From research to business

The technological principles for Industrial Data Space are being developed in the context of research. Currently the Industrial Data Space research project being carried out at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is of key importance. The pre-competition project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It started on 1 October 2015 and runs for three years.

The most important points about the research project at a glance:

In total, there are 12 Fraunhofer Institutes taking part in the work.

The different parts of the work being carried out in the project are closely linked with each other and are aligned to the Industry 4.0. Participants in the research project are also involved in the working groups of the platform. This work is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Boris Otto. Within the context of the Industrial Data Space research project the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is working on the following main objectives:
  • Designing and describing a reference architecture model for Industrial Data Space. The reference architecture model not only describes the technical software basis of the Industrial Data Space as a conceptual model but also the necessary protection, governance, cooperation and control mechanisms to ensure data is processed and exchanged securely.
  • Prototypical implementation of the framework architecture in selected use cases
  • Designing and continuing a “standardisation roadmap”
  • Designing the business model for the stakeholders in Industrial Data Space
  • Designing the certification concept and a business model for the Industrial Data Space certification authority
  • Developing a method for the Industrial Data Space users to transform business strategies according to the new requirements on digitalisation
  • Deriving recommendations for action for the operation of Industrial Data Space and identifying new research fields for the sustainable development of Industrial Data Space

The research project is divided into the following working packages: reference architecture model, software piloting, use cases, standardisation contributions, certification concept, business model innovation, recommendations for action, institutionalisation and project management.

The work is being carried out according to a fixed schedule:

  • 30.06.2016 Presentation of the specification documents for the interfaces of the connector components and the provision of an application skeleton
  • 31.08.2016 Presentation of the prototype of the core container
  • January 2017 Presentation of the first Broker version
  • 31.01.2017 Publication of the architecture document
  • March 2017 Development of the Trusted Connector

Die Industrial Data Space Association is closely integrated in these processes. Research results, e.g. software components etc., are regularly made available to the members of the association for validation and further development.

The services within the pre-competition BMBF project include:
  • Running workshops to specify use cases together with the companies
  • Developing a project plan for the implementation of a pilot
  • Accompanying implementation
  • Implementing the core components for Industrial Data Space

In addition to the pre-competition project, the Industrial Data Space Association is taking care of the following tasks:

  • Implementing the pilot at the company (in particular data processing)
  • Connecting the company to the Industrial Data Space

A blueprint for data space

The reference architecture model for the Industrial Data Space consists of four partial architectures. It will present a blueprint for safe data exchange and the efficient combination of data and can be configured for each individual case.

Business architecture

Includes all concepts that are important from an economic perspective, e.g. data governance, cooperative data management.

Data and service architecture

Forms the technical functional core of the Industrial Data Space with app store, brokers and connectors

Software architecture

Describes the implementation of the data and service architecture of the Industrial Data Space.

Security architecture

Contains different security aspects, e.g. interface security, evidence of identity, data use monitoring.

New standards for the digital economy

With their work on Industrial Data Space the science and business communities are pursuing the objective of setting a new comprehensive standard for data economy. During the development of the Industrial Data Space, existing standards are being used and further developed if necessary.
